We read food labels but do you know what's in your skincare?
If you don't know, now you know...
Can you tell I'm passionate about food, nutrition, health and wellness? Yeah, just a little!
I've come to read food labels, use essential oils, and turn to a lot of DIY recipes for a host of household cleaning supplies. Despite these efforts I rather willingly ignored a huge component to health - what I put on my skin. While I'm fully aware our skin is the largest organ of our body and therefore absorbs everything rather quickly, I've dismissed this key element to my health. I've come to use natural lotions for my daughters, but what about the skin products, and makeup I use on my self? Honestly, it was overwhelming and I didn't want to think about it.
However, I've become one of those folks who reads ingredients and prefers to take control of what I contribute to my environment, including the food I eat and the products I use.
That’s where Beautycounter comes in for me. I’ve tried all sorts of natural products the last couple of years as I was battling hormonal acne after my second daughter, despite cleaning up my diet. Beautycounter was the first one that actually worked! After finding out more about Beautycounter, I fell in love with their mission to get safer products into the hands of everyone.
So who is Beautycounter you ask and why should I care? Beautycounter creates products that are safe and high-performing without toxic ingredients linked to health conditions. This beautiful and shocking video is more eloquent than me. It's only 3 minutes and I bet you will learn some staggering facts about the beauty industry. Watch here:
Beautycounter (BC) is first and foremost on a mission to educate. Take a minute to think about how many products you use in a day – this isn’t just for the ladies you know. From your toothpaste to shampoo and conditioner, to lotion, chapstick, makeup. On average women use 12 products a day, meaning you’re potentially putting 100 different chemicals on your body. We read food ingredients but we don’t take the time to read the ingredients in our skincare. The bottom line is that we shouldn’t have to sacrifice our health in the name of beauty.
In case you skipped over the video, here are some staggering facts for you:
· Did you know the EU bans 1,400 toxic chemicals while the US bans 11?
· One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, 90% of these diagnoses are not due to genetic links, but rather environmental factors
· 1938 was the last year the government passed a law regulating cosmetics
· Babies are being born pre-polluted. Cord blood studies have found that there were over 200 toxic chemicals in the baby's cord blood
· Of the ingredients in our personal care products, 80% have never been assessed for human safety, making it legal to sell skin care and cosmetics that contain harmful chemicals linked to cancer and other serious health impacts.
Ok, I don’t want to be all doom and gloom here. And this is really how BC got started. At the heart of the BC movement is safety and performance. BC offers complete product transparency. You will know what you’re putting on your skin! BC is committed to their NEVER list and never using ingredients that have been proven to disrupt your health.
I encourage you to educate yourself and start making healthier choices for your family
You're most likely using these products already, take the opportunity to evaluate what you can control. You can control what you eat to heal your body from the inside out. You can also control what you put on your body, healing it from the outside in.
